Whether you live in Atlanta, Augusta or any other city  in Georgia, you know the summers can be hot and dry. Is it possible to have a beautiful yard that can withstand the southern sun? Yes, with these tips from Southern States®, you will be well on your way to having a beautiful lawn year-round.

Georgia is situated in the southeastern region of the United States. Warm-weather grasses in southern lawns can tolerate the heat up to a point. Choosing the right grass seed variety for this region of the country is vital. Some warm season grasses include: bermuda grass, centipede grass and zoysia grass. If you are unsure which is best for your yard, ask a Southern States lawn expert for grass seed advice.

According to the University of Georgia’s Cooperative Extension, most Georgia soils are low in pH and and one or more essential nutrients. Soils can vary greatly state-wide and the need for lime and fertilizer will depend on the homeowner’s soil requirements. For best results, conduct a soil test to check the pH and acidity levels before you buy your grass seed and fertilizer. A soil test is the best way to determine the amount of lime and fertilizer needed for your lawn.

Our seasonal lawn packages include one mow, edge, weedeating and blow. Our expert Lawn Care Team use state of the art floating deck commercial mowers that flow with the contour of your yard perfectly which prevents scalping, increases the health of your lawn, and gives it that golf course manicured look.

**Bonus- Unlike many of our competitors who usually only edge once a month, we edge your sidewalks, drives, and beds every time we mow! We do not bag any grass clippings as it is much better for the lawn. When necessary, grass clippings and leaves are bagged and removed from the property.

Mulching- Mulching is one of the most important ways to maintain healthy plants. We have a variety of mulch options that vary in color and size. Some benefits of mulching are prevention of water loss by reducing evaporation of water from soil. This saves you money on your water bill! In additional, mulching also prevents soil splashing which reduces disease to plants. Last but not least, it creates curb appeal by making your flower and plant beds look neat and well kept. For maximum benefits, it is best to mulch twice a year preferably around end of April and end of September. Save even more money with a whole season mulch package.

Aeration- Core aeration (also known as cultivation) is essential to getting you the most out of your other lawn care services. It reduces thatch in your lawn while it opens the way for air, water and fertilizer to reach the root zone of the turf. Our state of the art Core aerating machines do this by removing plugs of grass and soil. Lawn aeration is the secret to getting the most out of your other lawn care services. The goal of aeration is to get air into the soil by loosening up clay and compaction. Ga soil has a high clay content so aeration is an important service that should be considered. Aeration will also improve drainage and bioactivity, and will bring about improved soil structure. The final result will be deeper-rooted healthier, greener lawn that will be far more resistant to heat, disease, and drought.

Bed Edging- We edge beds around your flowers, shrubs, and trees. Having freshly edged beds certainly adds to curb appeal giving you yard a crisp clean look.

Spring and Fall Cleanup- Spring and Fall cleanup encompasses clearing leaves, sticks, dead plants and other debris from the bushes and beds. Cleaning the leaves, sticks, and other debris from the lawn.

Leaf Removal- Increase your homes curb appeal and give your yard that clean crisp look by keeping it free of leaves. We can dispose of leaves in a variety of ways depending on the preference of the homeowner.

A lawn that is watered properly will grow longer, deeper roots and will be more drought tolerant. The best time to water your lawn is in the morning. You want the grass to dry before nightfall in order to reduce the possibility of disease. Lawns need about one inch of water per week to thrive. For best results, your grass should get a good soaking weekly and then have a chance to dry between waterings.

Ongoing lawn care that includes using a weed control product will create a healthy lawn that can withstand the hot summer heat. For a specific weed-control plan for your lawn, you need to know what type of turfgrass you have and what type of weed you have. If you are unsure, check with your local Southern States lawn expert.

Never remove more than one-third of the height of the grass blade in a single cutting. In the hottest part of summer, mow 0.5 to 1.0 inch higher than the suggested lawn height to shade the soil and keep the roots cool. See suggested mowing heights for lawn grasses in Georgia.
